Set One Price Alert Instead of Checking Your Portfolio Every Day

Updated 2026-09-11 · UK · ~5 min read

Checking your portfolio every day does nothing for your returns and plenty to your nerves. An alert does the watching, so you don't have to.

The most valuable feature on TradingView for a long-term investor is not a chart. It is the alert. Set it once, and the platform watches the price for you and pings you only if something you actually care about happens. The rest of the time, you leave it alone.

How to set one

  1. Open the chart for a holding on your watchlist.
  2. Right-click the chart and choose Add alert (or press the alarm-clock icon).
  3. Set the condition — for example, price crossing a level you would consider a genuine buying opportunity, or falling to a point you want to know about.
  4. Choose how you're notified: app push, email, or both.

Use it to do less, not more

The wrong way to use alerts is to set dozens and turn your phone into a trading terminal. The right way, for someone building wealth slowly, is one or two per holding — a level that would actually change what you do, such as topping up on a big fall. Everything below that threshold is noise you have now given yourself permission to ignore.

This is the whole King Compound idea in one setting: automate the watching, remove the temptation to fiddle, and let time do the work. The investors who do best are usually the ones who forgot the account existed — an alert lets you safely be one of them.
